Open More Doors of Opportunity with the TOEFL® Test

The Test of English as a Foreign LanguageTM (TOEFL) can help you open more doors of opportunity. More than 6,000+ institutions in 110 countries recognise the TOEFL test, including most of the world’s most prestigious schools. Not only is it the world’s most accepted English language test, it is considered the BEST.

Here’s why the TOEFL test is your KEY to academic success:

Flexibility

You can take the TOEFL test and demonstrate you have the English communication skills needed to study in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, most countries in continental Europe, the United States and Canada. No other test can give you this kind of flexibility when you make plans to study abroad. No wonder more than 18 million students have chosen to take the TOEFL test!

The TOEFL test is offered in three formats: Computer-based, paper-based, and now an Internet-based test (TOEFL® iBT) which is being phased-in during 2006 and will eventually replace the other testing formats.

Quality

What makes the TOEFL iBT high-quality is that it simulates real university and classroom life by asking you to combine more than one language skill. For example, you are asked to read a passage, listen to a short lecture about a topic, and then speak or write in response. Students who have taken the test said it is “more modern” and “life-like.”
This method of testing:

  • Confirms you are prepared to begin your academic studies
  • Demonstrates you have the English-language skills to succeed

The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Given in one day, the entire test is about four hours long. You can take notes during the test, just as you would in a real academic course.

Fairness

When you take a test, you want to be sure that you have the same chance to succeed as everyone else. With the TOEFL iBT, your speaking is tested in the most fair and objective manner. You wear headphones so you can clearly listen to the questions, and then you speak into a microphone. Your responses are sent back via the Internet to ETS, the company that creates, administers and scores the TOEFL test. Multiple, certified raters score your speaking responses anonymously. These raters are constantly monitored to make sure they are rating responses accurately.

Some tests that measure speaking skills via an interview, such as IELTS, may not provide the same level of fairness because the teacher who conducts the interviews also scores the results and may give preference to one student over another. Also, one interviewer may be more lenient than another because they are not constantly monitored.

Easy Access

By the end of 2006 you will be able to access TOEFL iBT at more than 3000 test centres in 150 countries. You can then view your scores online 15 working days after you test, and receive useful feedback about your level of ability.

Student Comments

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I would award a 10 because TOEFL iBT best reflects how English is used in a school setting.”

  • Luz Maria Torres, Student

“The test was like real life and modern situations, and that is what made it
stand out from the other tests.”
– Li Li, Student
