India Student Visa Guide

India, with its diverse culture, historic landmarks, and vibrant cities, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. Home to numerous universities that are recognised globally, India offers a high standard of education across a variety of disciplines. The country is celebrated not only for its academic prowess but also for its welcoming populace, rich historical heritage, and dynamic cultural scene, making it a perfect choice for international students to pursue their higher education.

India Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

If you are from a country outside the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations, you will likely need to apply for a student visa to study in India. India offers a ‘Student Visa’, which is applicable for the duration of your course or up to five years, whichever is less.

To apply for a student visa to study in India, the first step is to gain admission to an Indian university. After receiving your acceptance, you will need to demonstrate that you have enough financial resources to support yourself during your studies. This typically involves showing proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses.

Once you have met the financial requirements, the next step is to apply for your student visa through the Indian visa application website or at your nearest Indian consulate. As part of your application, you will need to submit several documents, including:

  • A letter of acceptance from the university confirming your enrolment in a full-time course.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Evidence of health insurance coverage.
  • An English proficiency test score, if required by your university.
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs.

The visa application fee for a student visa to India varies by country but is generally around $100 for most nationalities. It is crucial to apply for your visa well in advance of your intended travel date to India, as processing times can vary depending on the time of year and your country of residence.

Upon arrival in India, students may need to register with the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival if their course duration is longer than 180 days. This registration is separate from the visa application.

India Student Visa Work Rules

India offers more limited opportunities for international students to work while studying. Students on a student visa in India are generally not permitted to take up employment during their studies. However, internships related to their field of study may be allowed, subject to approval from the university and the FRRO. This enables students to gain valuable experience in their field of study while managing their living expenses to some extent.

Upon completing your studies, if you wish to pursue employment in India, you would need to apply for an Employment Visa or an appropriate work permit, depending on your employment situation and the regulations in place at the time.
