Masters in Norway

Norway offers a unique educational landscape, characterised by its state-funded institutions which include traditional universities, specialised institutions focusing on areas like technology and engineering, and university colleges that offer a more vocational style of education.

These institutions award a range of masters degrees, including Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Master of Engineering (MEng), and Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Duration

The duration for postgraduate degrees in Norway is typically two years for most taught degrees. Research degrees can take longer than this, depending on your research project.

Language of Teaching

While Norwegian is the primary language of teaching across many programmes, a large number of masters programmes are taught in English. This has made Norway an increasingly popular destination for students from around the globe.

How to Apply for a Masters Degree in Norway

International students should apply directly to their chosen institution through the university’s official website. The application process might require a personal statement, a CV, academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Some universities may also use the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS) for applications.

Proof of English proficiency is essential for non-native speakers, with IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent English language test scores usually accepted. Certain programmes may have additional requirements, such as specific undergraduate degrees or work experience.

Postgraduate Tuition Fees for International Students

One of the most attractive aspects of studying in Norway is that there are no tuition fees for both domestic and international students at public universities. However, students will pay a small semester fee, generally not more than 100 EUR, which contributes to the welfare services provided by the student unions. Even though there are no tuition fees, living costs in Norway can be high, and students need to budget accordingly. Scholarship opportunities are available to help manage living expenses.
