About Public Relations and Media, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

Public relations (PR) deals with managing an organisation's relationship with its own staff and its external audiences. There is growing demand from public and private organisations for graduates with PR and communication skills in * PR agencies * charities * voluntary organisations * publishing * events management. This course gives you an understanding of the cultural, political and economic role of the media in today's society. You gain the specialised knowledge and professional skills needed to work effectively in PR. You develop the skills needed to research, plan, implement and manage a PR campaign to a professional standard. These skills include * editing * electronic publishing * writing for print and broadcast media * communication * presentation * IT * campaign planning * crisis management * ethics. Some parts of the course relate to media studies. These give you a grounding in media forms, meanings and institutions, and improve your awareness of the PR industry and its broader context. In your final year, you do a supervised client-based project where you develop a portfolio of work, which includes * press releases * press cuttings * campaign leaflets * photo calls. This records your development and improves your career opportunities. Your project is an important feature of the course and gives you first hand experience of working with a real life client. We give you the practical, intellectual and social skills to help you find a career in PR. You also gain transferable communication skills that improve your employability in professional communications generally.
