In the future, such applications will pervade industrial, commercial, and, indeed, personal life as the integration of computer technology and digital communications continues.

In fact, the widespread deployment of autonomous computers working cooperatively over data communications networks promises to be the most significant development since the introduction of the personal computer. These systems will bring about major changes in industry, commerce, education, leisure, and government. The increasing use of the Internet and the World Wide Web in all walks of life and of Intranets in business is evidence of this trend.
