About Spanish, MA (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

Spanish embraces the study of the languages, literatures and cultures of Spain and the wider Spanish-speaking world, with particular emphasis on Latin America.

What will I study?

At all levels of study you will have the opportunity to advance in your understanding and use of Spanish, both written and oral. You will also study from a wide range of linguistic, literary, cultural, social and historical topics.

There are separate first-year classes for beginners and non-beginners in Spanish. The beginners’ class is specially designed with an emphasis on intensive language acquisition. A good performance in the beginners’ course allows you to continue with Spanish in second year and potentially on to Honours level.

If you progress to Honours you are usually required to spend a year’s residence abroad (an additional year before entering Junior Honours). Junior and Senior Honours years offer a range of courses on the literature, culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world and encourage you to develop your own specific areas of interest within that broad field.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and seminars.

Special features
  • Excellent audio-visual and IT facilities are available to support both the language and the wider cultural elements of the programme, and emphasis in teaching is given to the development of both oral and written skills.

  • At all levels, elements of tuition are given by native language speakers of Spanish.

Note
  • The University also offers a degree programme in Hispanic Studies.
