About Classical Civilisation and Art History, BA (Hons) - at University of Nottingham
This course combines the study of the classical world with a rigorous training in analytical philosophy. You will have the opportunity to study classical history, art and visual culture, thought, religion and social life as well as some key thinkers, ideas, and movements that have shaped philosophical thought. The study of Greek or Latin is not required, but may be undertaken as part of the course.
Year oneYear one is a qualifying year, which means that you must pass it, but the results do not count towards your final degree. You gain familiarity with the practices of working at degree level and an understanding of the different ways in which historical material can be used. Core modules are offered by both departments. Beginners' language modules in classics are optional.
Year twoPart I of the degree is weighted at 40% of the final assessment. You will demonstrate a greater assurance of working at degree level and in direct aspects of your study with some measure of independence. You can opt to take a range of modules in both departments, including an extended study in Classical Civilisation to prepare for third year dissertation work.
Year threePart II of the degree is weighted at 60% of the overall assessment. At the end of Year three, you are expected to demonstrate an efficient use of scholarly apparatus, to take initiative in your work and have some independence of judgement. You have the option of undertaking a dissertation in either subject.
By the end of the courseYou will have explored culture over two millennia and have a broad knowledge of a variety of philosophical theories. You will have developed the ability to abstract, analyse and construct logical arguments and to recognise the strengths and weaknesses on both sides of a philosophical debate. You will have tailored your degree to your own interests, carried out in-depth study in specific areas and developed skills in independent thinking and study, and the ability to communicate your ideas clearly and precisely.
