About Food Science and Technology, BSc (Hons) - at United International College (Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University)

The aims of this programme are to nurture graduates who are knowledgeable and competent in handling issues of production, marketing and management of food, and nutritional science. The programme intends to equip students as food scientists, technologists, regulatory specialists and food science professionals employed by government agencies, local and overseas food companies-establishing sales and manufacturing facilities in China.

Our curriculum covers areas of general sciences, including Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, and Analytical Chemistry, giving students a solid foundation in food science and technology. Students are required to take a group of core courses such as Food Chemistry, Food Process Engineering, Food Analysis, Food Materials Science, Physiology, Food Toxicology, Food Science Laboratory and Nutrition. In addition, the programme offers a series of major elective courses such as Food Product Development and Practice, Food Safety and Quality Management, Nutrition in Practice. To prepare students for managerial positions in food industries, the programme offers courses jointly with the Division of Business and Management such as Principles of Accounting I, Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, and Human Resource Management. Our curriculum maintains a cutting-edge approach, encompassing the latest scientific, technological, and industrial developments, aiming at providing the necessary human resources for the development of the food industry in China and overseas.

FST laboratories are abundant in resources, with more than 200 large-scale instruments, and Zhuhai Key Laboratory of Agricultural Products Quality and Food Safety are available for student's research. Besides, the Food Safety Testing Center provides FST students opportunities of training, internship, conducting research, and social practice for a long time. Studnets can quickly improve their skills in instrument operation and experimental analysis.

Food Science and Technology Programme (FST) in UIC is the only food science major in China mainland that is taught in English. The curriculum is in line with overseas standards, smoothing the path for students to go abroad for further studies. More than 74% of FST undergraduate graduates chose to study further at prestigious universities at homeland and abroad. Around 7.5% of graduates are currently studying for doctoral degrees at famous overseas universities and some were granted full scholarships. FST undergraduates have published more than 50 papers in international journals, which makes the programme become the most powerful research and development major in the UIC.

Since the inception in 2007, our graduates have been successfully employed in many different fields as government civil servants and technologists in multinational companies. For those who decided to pursue a higher degree, some of them have been admitted to a Master's degree or Ph.D. programme in renowned universities such as Cornell University, Northwestern University, Emory University, University of Massachusetts, Rutgers University, Georgetown University, North Carolina State University, University of Connecticut, The University of Alabama, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of British Columbia, McGill University, University of Guelph, Wageningen University, University College London, University of Warwick, University of Leeds, University of Glasgow, Australian National University, University of Melbourne, The University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, The University of Queensland, Monash University, Lund University, University of Copenhagen, National University of Singapore, Nihon University, Kyoto University, Hiroshima University, Hokkaido University, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Entry requirements

1.Recruitment Requirements: UIC welcomes international students from all over the world. The home countries should have diplomatic relationship with China. UIC recruits international students who are foreign passport holders and above 18 years old. As X1 study visa opening for application, for 2023 UIC recruits on site students who can secure their visa and enter into China. We may accept late arrival students, but generally speaking, UIC accepts the students can study on site.

2.Admission format: UIC is adopting rolling admission, first come first serve. International students can submit their application via below link before June 2023: https://p.uic.edu.cn/itraining/ido/login/index UIC will give international students feedback within two weeks if an interview is needed.

3.Scholarships: UIC offers limited full entrance (100,000 RMB), 30% entrance scholarship (30,000 RMB) and government scholarships (10,000 RMB) for 2023 intake. Scholarship distribution is also first come, first serve. For academic performance, full entrance scholarship holders need to be A or A+ students, 30% entrance scholarship holders need to be B or B above students. The college will have the final decision for distribution.
